In Winter in sub-zero temperature starting of the engine is much more complex. Cold start, especially on diesel vehicles, requires high voltage work systems and patient driver. In order to make it easier to spin the crankshaft, you need to clearly know what kind of oil to fill the winter in the car engine.

Manufacturer Recommendations

What kind of oil to fill the winter

In the first place when choosing winter lubrication should refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. Each car attached to a manual in which the manufacturer clearly specifies what oil to pour in the winter in the model (what brand and what parameters). If service book for some reason is missing or the information is not relevant (for example, such brands are obsolete and no longer produced), the liquid will have to choose based on the parameters and tolerances. If they are outdated, and grease on those criteria don't match then you need to examine more carefully the state of the market of chemicals for vehicles, because you can count only on themselves and on their own knowledge. You should clarify that you should not buy oil based on the prompt of the seller or the opinion of friends. Unfortunately, the average buyer cannot be confidence in the competence and honesty of the traders, and from a friend can be a completely different machine, so something that suits him for your "swallows" might be the worst option.

Types of motor oil chemical composition

Originally used for vehicles only mineral motor oil. The name "mineral" speaks for itself – this means that the liquid is made from natural ingredients (oil). But mineral engine oil for winter is strictly not suitable, especially for those places where the temperature drops far below -10 degrees Celsius – it just freezes in the engine.

Was Then established synthetic motor oil with the synthesis of molecules that provide more or less the same indicators when changing operating temperatures.

There is still this kind of as a semi-synthetic oil. It's a natural base with the addition of artificially created compounds.

Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. As mentioned above, the liquid mineral composition is not suitable for operation at low temperatures, but it cleans the engine of carbon and sludge slowly and gradually, otslaivaya “garbage” small parts. Then when you replace it just displays with working.

Polysynthetic has greater resistance to temperature changes, but this engine oil for winter is also not suitable, since the threshold is low temperature is too high, if you look at the thermometer.

What kind of oil to pour in the winter

Synthetic fluid is the most popular, as calculated at different temperatures (depending on classification), but does not lose its working properties by heating or cooling of the engine, roughly speaking, synthetics are "adjusted". But if previously the motor was bad or inappropriate lubricant chemistry, and it is covered inside with hardened sediment and carbon, switching to high quality synthetics can be in rapid detachment of "garbage", as a consequence, the oil channels and the filter will be clogged. And then I have to send my engine in for repair, which is not cheap. So if you do not know what was filled before and how many thousands of miles driven without replacement, it is best to pour in the engine cleaning fluid, and then new oil, and a few subsequent cycles to perform the replacement more often than recommended by the manufacturer.

Viscosity

When choosing what kind of oil to fill the winter, the first thing to pay attention to viscosity is one of the most important indicators of performance lubricating fluid.

Motor oil for the winter

The point is that the details of the engine RUB against each other with great speed. Between them there must be a film of oil, which, on the one hand, will reduce the friction, and therefore heat and wear, and on the other hand, will provide sealing by friction (e.g., the cylinder). If engine oil is too thick in winter, then will have to have a high viscosity, then the system of every movement will be difficult, requiring larger effort and hard work of the engine, the return will be low. If the oil is too thin it will just run down the parts, providing a layer between the pistons andthe walls of the cylinder, i.e. the friction of the metal will fade and dwindle.

Working temperature of the engine is constantly changing. If the car is worth, the temperature will be equal to the ambient temperature. When the engine warms up before driving, the temperature slowly rises. While driving it depends on the force of the motor can rise and fall in the process. And then the question arises, what kind of oil is better for winter use, if cold, it thickens, and when heated becomes liquid.

To ensure comprehensive protection in the cold season at low temperature, the oil must remain sufficiently liquid to facilitate the engine for easier starting and to avoid oil starvation, and the increase of operating temperature, it should be thick enough to create the oil film.

Classification of engine oils SAE

The American society of automotive engineers has established a classification of the viscosity of the oil, which is used now worldwide. Will discuss this further.

engine Oil for the winter

Winter oil

Earlier question about what oil is better for winter to use, not even stood in front of the motorists. The answer was clear – winter. In the SAE grading, it is designated by the letter W after the numerical values (winter – "winter"). The packaging indicated: SAE 0W or SAE 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W. The number before the W told the buyer what the lowest temperature can withstand oil, without causing harm to the powertrain. Before winter motorist definitely made the oil change on appropriate to the weather conditions of the region, regardless of how he skated in the previous lubricant. Winter oil does not thicken at low temperatures, but became too liquid, if the temperature is raised.

Summer oil

As per SAE standard summer oil was designated just by number (5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40). She meant the upper threshold temperatures at which it is possible to use a liquid. The higher summer temperature in this region, the more indicator is needed to buy oil, so it was rather sticky in the heat.

What oil is better for winter

All year round

In recent times, such types of grease, as summer or winter oil is gone, as is commonly used all-season oil. It is much easier to handle, no need to make it mandatory replacement before each new season, looking for oil with a different classification of the same brand as the previous one. Multigrade oil is indicated by two digits and the letter W between them. The first digit indicates “winter” performance liquid (depends on what kind of oil to fill the winter), and the second – of “summer”. This universal lubricant, of course, has both lower and upper thresholds temperatures, but everyone can choose exactly the kind of oil that will fit in the desired range. While in the winter it stays quite fluid, and in the summer will retain its viscosity.

Selection oil classification SAE for a particular climate

  • SAE 20W-40 – from -10 to +45;
  • SAE 15W-40 – from -15 to +45;
  • SAE 10W-40 – -20 to +35;
  • SAE 10W-30 – from -20 to +30;
  • SAE 5W-40 – from -25 to +35;
  • SAE 5W-30 – from -25 to +20;
  • SAE 0W-40 – from -30 to +35;
  • SAE 0W-30 – -30 to +20.

As you can see from the above list, for the inhabitants of temperate latitudes is perfect 5W40 in the winter, because it can easily handle the low temperatures and does not flow with warming. They can be safely used all year round.

Classification engine oil API

American Institute of fuel has created another classification that should be considered when selecting oils for winter. As a rule, this indicator shows the quality of the lubricant. Manufacturers are not required to test their product API and place information about it on the label, but most often it is substandard liquid does not pass this procedure. As every driver tries to pour the best oil for the winter, then you should look for a lubricant with this value.

In the API there are two main designations. The letter S tells the customer that this oil is only for gasoline engines and the letter C reports that the liquid can be poured only in diesel engine. Sometimes the packaging can meet the dual marking, which looks like – S…/C… or so – C…/S… In the first case, the oil is better suited to a petrol car, but the manufacturer allows its use in diesel cars, in the second case – on the contrary.

What oil is better to pour in the winter

And in the classification of S, and classification there are additional parameters that are important when choosing what oil to pour in the winter.

Petrol engines

  • SA, SB, SC, SD, SE, SF – old classes that are no longer used. This oil, which is suitable for engines 1930-1989 years of issue.
  • SG – oilfor engines produced since 1989. Protects the engine from carbon deposits and corrosion, and oxidation.
  • SH & ndash; oil for engines with the 1994 model year. Superior protection against deposits, corrosion and oxidation, reduces wear. Suitable if recommended class SG and below.
  • SJ – engine oil under 1996. Has all the previous qualities, improved intinerary complex, more accurate work in the cold. Suitable if recommended class SH and below.
  • SL – oil for turbocharged and multi-valve engines produced since 2000. Increased quality control, suitable for motors, which recommended the class SJ and below.
  • SM – oil for modern motors (since 2004). Superior protection against premature wear and accumulation of deposits. This engine oil is suitable for all engines, which recommended lubricant class below. Today is the best engine oil for the winter.

Diesel engines

  • CA, CB, CC, CD, CE – obsolete classes.
  • CF – for engines since 1990, with indirect injection. Contains additives to reduce fouling, corrosion, oxidation and wear. Acceptable use at the recommended class CD.
  • CG & ndash; for engines after 1995, which are subject to high loads. The oil prevents the accumulation of carbon and soot, oxidation and foaming.
  • CH – oil for engines after 1998. Has all the above qualities, but additionally meets the standards of toxicity of exhaust gas.
  • CI – class, adopted in 2002. The oil meets all environmental regulations, has a cleansing additive. Reduces the amount of soot and carbon deposits, has high fluidity. Best engine oil for the winter for new diesel engines.

Figure 2 or 4 after literal values suggests what engine – two-stroke or four-stroke – suitable lubrication.

Classification of engine oils according to ACEA

ACEA – this is the analogue of the API, only European. The label usually contains information about the compliance of any one of these classifications, but you can find both.

  • Letter G indicates that the oil is suitable for gasoline engine, and the numbers from 1 to 5 talk about its quality.
  • The Letters PD indicate that the oil is suitable for diesel engines of passenger cars, numbers 1 and 2 say about quality.
  • Letter D with numbers from 1 to 5 means a lubricant designed for diesel engines of trucks.

What you need to do before winter

What kind of oil to pour in the winter

Before you think about what kind of oil to fill the winter, you need to make sure that the car is ready for high loads and low temperatures. Especially for owners of diesel cars, which often have to throw their "swallow" in the Parking lot or near home and to run a public transport stop.

The Most important thing and the first – battery and starter must be in good working condition! If there are minimal problems with the battery in the fall, then in winter they will appear before you in a larger size. After checking these components, you can move on to thinking about what oil to pour in the winter, but it's not just engine oil, but transmission, the lubricating fluid in the axle and power steering (if present). Also changed to winter versions antifreeze fluids, windshield washing fluid. In the first case - to keep the water from freezing in the system, and the second to ensure good visibility while driving.

Only to determine what oil is better to pour in the winter in your engine, is to go to storm the shops with cosmetics. Happy trails!
