Designers AZLK in the development of “the Muscovite-2141" planned creation of a whole family of vehicles for different purposes (basic hatchback, saloon «Moskvich-2142" pickup "Muscovite-2335" increased capacity "Muscovite-2901"). The new generation was planned as an intermediate between the production plants of VAZ and GAZ. Especially for them we developed the original family of engines with a cylinder capacity of 1.8 liters. Production of engines was planning to place in a new engine plant AZLK.
Work on the car with notchback was conducted in parallel, and after the creation of the hatchback. This decision greatly complicated the task of the designers and pushed the timing of the creation of the machine. The first sedan the fourth generation of cars AZLK “Moskvich-2142" appeared only in 1990. By this time, ‘the Muscovite-2141" was in production for the fifth year and it came with an old 1.5-liter engine UZAM 412 and the 1.6-litre from the VAZ-2106.
Initially, the sedan was supposed to go into production in 1992, after the commissioning of the engine plant. This decision insisted that the management of the factory, well remember about the launch of a series of models 2141, fast and low-power motors. Originally the production was meant for short wheelbase version of the sedan “Moskvich-2142" but with a number of external and internal changes. According to the concept of what the sedan was supposed to be the base model of the plant.
The prototype was different, different from decisions, “the Muscovite-2141" design of bumpers and the front of the body. But by the time AZLK already experienced enormous difficulties in marketing their products. Therefore, the serial production of the sedan refused indefinitely. Problems with the quality and marketing of products led in 1996 to stop the Assembly of cars in AZLK. After the reorganization of the plant, the pipeline was re-launched in 1997. With the aim of expanding the market, it was decided to urgently expand the range of cars in AZLK. One of these machines and was going to be a sedan.
However, contrary to logic, the new management of the plant AZLK bet on the production of more expensive extended version of “Moskvich-2142". Elongation of the body was achieved by installing 20 cm inserted into the body between the front and rear rows of seats. To increase the rigidity in the design of the elongated body introduced the spars running along the entire length. This solution was borrowed from the long version of the hatchback “Muscovite Yuri Dolgoruky». The windshield is glued into the opening in the body, while at “the Muscovite-2141" is installed through the rubber gasket.
As the main power unit chose two-liter 114-horsepower engine "Renault F3R". The car received the name “Moskvich 2142 Knyaz Vladimir”.
Due to the lengthening of the cabin on the sedan “Prince Vladimir” was provided a great space for rear passengers feet. The rear seat is equipped with armrest and individual lamps. As the material for the seats was used velour.
Due to lengthening of the base, significantly improved the smoothness. Optionally, the car equipped with power steering, air conditioning, leather trim seats and electric Windows and mirrors.
On the machine used imported front optics "Hella" and a different bumper configuration. The resulting gap between the headlight and the bumper was closed by a special insert in body color. Such a design of the front end soon introduced to all the other cars. Hatchback-2141 with such changes is called “history”.
Since the sedan was positioned as the car of middle class, the designers have improved the sound insulation cabin. The hood and engine shield is trimmed with a special material that reduces noise from the engine.
The Production of sedan “Prince Vladimir” from the beginning it was difficult because of the lack of factory tooling for stamping body panels. The first batch of cars had welded from separate pieces of the roof panel and tailgate. Only the moment of cessation of production appeared experienced tooling for stamping one-piece roof and door panels. But the floor panel on all the machines welded together from two half parts hatchback 2141. This same technology made the outer and inner elements of the skirts. The frame of the rear door was assembled from two frames door “the Muscovite-2141".
Because of such features of the body Assembly was done in several stages, during which the body was removed from the conveyor for manual revision, and then came back.
Just before 2001 was released at least 1300 sedans with engines of different models and about 1,500 bodies. Unclaimed body left on the plant. After the abolition of the plant they are disposed of.
At the time the extended version of the sedan was positioned by the factory as a company car for managers of the middle rank. However, the price of the car with a French engine "Reno" was too high and the car notwere in great demand. The main buyer of these machines was the mayor of the city of Moscow, which was the largest shareholder of JSC "Muscovite" (so the last years of called AZLK). However, feedback on “Moskvich-2142" were mostly negative.
To reduce the cost of the plant, "Muscovite" began to equip sedans “Moskvich-2142" cheap 86-horsepower carbureted motor BONDS 3317 (there were versions with engines 3318 TIES and 248), has simplified the trim. Such machines were offered to the bodies of social protection even in manual control. But the cars were not in demand in this form.
In recent years, production experienced and small-scale samples of “Prince Vladimir” with the engine Renault F4R and F7R (16 valves displacement 2 liters), all-wheel drive and independent rear suspension. The machines with modified external elements planned to launch a series under the designation "Muscovite-2144R7 Ivan Kalita”. All were made up to 50 such machines.
Another project based on “Prince Vladimir” was the coupe “Duet”, these cars were about 20 pieces. «Ivan Kalita” and “Duet” have the same numbering body with “Moskvich-2142". These machines were draw a line under a long history of plant “Muscovite".
