In our life we often have to deal with the application of geometry in practice, for example, in construction. Among the most common geometric shapes have and trapezoid. And to ensure that the project was successful and beautiful, correct and accurate calculation of the elements for this shape.

What is a trapezoid? Is a convex quadrilateral which has a pair of parallel sides, called bases of a trapezoid. But there are two other sides connecting these grounds. They are called lateral. One of the issues regarding this figure is: «How to find the height of a trapezoid?” it is important to note that the altitude is the segment that defines the distance from one base to another. There are several ways to determine this distance depending on the known values.

1. The known values of both grounds, let us denote them by b and k, as well as the area of this trapezoid. Using the known values to find the height of a trapezoid in this case very easily. As we know from geometry, the area of the trapezoid is computed as the product of the half sum of the bases and the height. From this formula you can easily derive the desired amount. For this you need a square divided by half the sum of the bases. In formulas it would look like this:

S=((b+k)/2)*h, hence h=S/((b+k)/2)=2*S/(b+k)

2. Known length of the middle line, let's call it d, and area. For those who don't know, the middle line is called the distance between the centres of the sides. How to find the height of a trapezoid in this case? According to the property of a trapezoid, the middle line corresponds to half the sum of bases, i.e. d=(b+k)/2. Again, resort to the formula of square. Replacing half the amount of grounds on the value of the middle line, we get the following:

The origin of the Slavs. The influence of different cultures

Slavs (under this name), according to some researchers, appeared in the story only in 6 century ad. However, the language of nationality bears the archaic features of the Indo-European community. This, in turn, suggests that the origin of the Slavs h...

S=d*h

As you can see from the formulas very easy to height. Dividing the area by the value of the middle line, we find the optimum value. Let us write this formula:

H=S/d

3. Known length of one side (b) and the angle formed between this side and the most base. The answer to the question how to find the height of the trapezoid, is in this case. Consider a trapezoid ABCD where AB and CD are the sides, and AB=b. The biggest reason is AD. The angle formed by AB and AD denote the α. From point B to lower the height h to the base AD. Now consider the resulting triangle ABF, which is rectangular. Side AB is the hypotenuse and BF is the leg. From the properties of a right triangle the ratio of sides and the value of the hypotenuse corresponds to the sine of the angle opposite the side (BF). Therefore, based on the above, to calculate the height of a trapezoid multiply the value of the known sides and the sine of the angle α. In a formula it looks as follows:

H = b *sin(α)

4. Similarly, we consider the case, if you know the size of the sides and angle, we denote its β, formed between this side and the lower base. When solving this problem, the angle between the known side and held the height will be 90°- β. Properties of triangles - the ratio of the length of the leg and of the hypotenuse is equal to the cosine of the angle between them. From this formula it is easy to derive the value of the height:

H = b *cos(β-90°)

5. How to find the height of a trapezoid if you know only the radius of the inscribed circle? From the definition of a circle, it touches one point of each base. In addition, these points lie on the same line as the center of the circle. From this it follows that the distance between them is diameter and, at the same time, the height of the trapezoid. Looks like this:

H=2*r

6. Often there are problems where it is necessary to find the altitude of an isosceles trapezoid. Recall that a trapezoid with equal sides is called isosceles. How to find the height of an isosceles trapezoid? With perpendicular diagonals, the height equal to the half sum of the bases.

But what if the diagonals are not perpendicular? Consider the isosceles trapezoid ABCD. According to its properties, the grounds are parallel. From this it follows that the angles at the bases will also be equal. We will have two height BF and CM. Based on the foregoing, it can be argued that the triangles ABF and DCM are equal, i.e. AF= DM = (AD-BC)/2 = (b-k)/ 2. Now, based on the conditions of the problem identified with known values, and then find the height, given all the properties of an isosceles trapezoid.
