According to the Scots, they invented a noble drink, replacing barley grapes. Obtained the alcohol they both liked what they called it “Uisge beatha”, which translated from Scottish, it means “water is life”. Then the conquerors from England took over the recipe and name, and after some changes in the pronunciation of the name “whiskey”.

Originally the now iconic drink is made exclusively in monasteries and were used as medicine. When the recipe fell into the hands of the peasants, they took advantage of them to obtain additional income. In addition to the barley began to use rye and sometimes oats. Due to several distillations the strength of the drink increased, which contributed to its popularity. This was not a pure drink of whiskey, and Scottish Scotch. In the second half of the nineteenth century there were manufacturing plants, and easy distillery has lost its relevance, and the whiskey was lost in quality.

History brandy

The name of the drink originated from overheated the wine from which it was made. “Branden” in Dutch, means “burn” and “wijn"translates as “wine”. From XV to XVI century the Dutch used a technique of driving in order to transport unstable alcoholic beverages to other countries. They took the wine and distilled, it turned out love to wine "brandewijn”. This word is subsequently reduced, and it is familiar to us "brandy". Now in English the word "brandy" refers to any strong alcoholic beverage, including brandy.

The EU has set about brandy rule. They can be called only one alcoholic product, aged in oak casks for at least six months, has the strength of not lower than 36 degrees, made exclusively from crushed grapes without pressing or grape wine. Classic brandy has the strength of from 57 to 75 percent and has a Golden-brown color. Often, brandy and cognac are identified as similar to their classic ways of cooking, colour, even taste. However, the production of brandy not applied such strict standards as brandy, and its taste can be quite varied, depending on used to prepare the raw materials.

History of cognac

The Homeland of this drink is France, the town of Cognac. That's where I first produced the cognac and named it in honor of the city. It is produced by special technology from a specific grape variety. Aged from 10 to 30 years in oak barrels, that “retired”. The longer the exposure, the more valuable and more expensive the drink.

In the twelfth century by Duke Guillaume X created the first vineyards in the region of Charente, where there was a Cognac. Began to produce wines, which were sold throughout Europe and glorified the region. But with transport there were some problems. It took too much time and often went so that upon arrival at the destination of French wine already sour and lost the original taste. Then an enterprising French invented the technology of wine distillate, and subsequently began double-distilling beverages. So they are not spoiled during transport, although acquired a more pungent smell and taste. Transported wine in oak barrels and found that the long delay of the vessel, the drink is improved. The idea came specially to withstand the drink in oak barrels. And there were modern cognac.

what distinguishes cognac from the whisky and brandy

Whiskey, brandy, cognac – what are the differences?

The origins of different drinks, moreover, they even invented in different countries, but this does not prevent people still argue about that whiskey, brandy, cognac – it is almost identical drinks. This view is fundamentally wrong.

This cognac is made from grapes and only in France. Has its specific taste, depending on the duration of exposure. Brandy – is one of the varieties of brandy, which is called distillable all the rest of the wine, but other grapes or even fruit and berries in any other area, except for France. In addition, the aging of brandy can be made in just six months.

Whiskey is the same – a product that stands alone. He is also aged, but is in a completely different way with the use of the crops. Now it becomes clear what the difference between cognac whiskey and brandy.

In addition, mention should be made of the classification of cognac. Real French cognac, you can find Latinmarking which will indicate the period of exposure, e.g., VSOP – 6 years and more, XO – 20 years. If you see on the bottles of brandy other marking in the form of stars, this means that you are ordinary, made of alcohol drink. The bottle with three stars means three years of alcohol exposure, from the five-year finding of alcohol in a barrel cognac out of 5 stars. Such “star” brandy can be called brandy because they are prepared not according to the classic recipe most often in Armenia, Georgia and Russia.

To drink whiskey, brandy, cognac and to drink fun, do not know their history, but still is nice to know that I drink, and feel like a connoisseur.
